aisha mugo
Aisha Mugo embodies the dual role of analogue visual artist and migration and urbanism scholar, working from Nairobi, Kenya. She bridges academic rigor and artistic practice to explore identity, memory, and urbanity, where her artistic and research journey has been an unwavering commitment to generating and contributing novel forms of archival practices and new geographies. Her work is a borderless map where she marks the Self, contributing to a visual understanding of African identity. Aisha has had her photographic essay Sisi Ni Nani? Who Are We? published in the South African research journal BUWA! (2019) and she has exhibited in Nairobi Design Week (2020). She was also a finalist of Authority Collective’s inaugural Lit List: Photographer’s to Watch (2019) and participated in the group exhibition at Photoville NYC. Aisha was a featured photographer in the International Center for Photography New York installment ICP Projected: Emerging Analog (2018) an exhibition curated by Kodak. As a contributing member of the spatial collective Matri-Archi(tecture) she co-produced and co-authored Homeplace - A Love Letter (2023), an installation commissioned by the Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich, reflecting on Afrodiasporic experiences and the concept of home. At the Pan-African Biennale, Aisha will continue to deepen her exploration of spatial memory and identity, contributing to the Biennale’s broader commitment to (re)imagining African spatial futures through alternative knowledge(s) and lived experiences of African urbanity.
