Yasmin Bushra is a multidisciplinary architect and urbanist based in Addis Ababa. Her work seeks to draw attention to aspects of urbanity that remain obscured when global capitalism is the primary reference point. She works to recenter knowledge production on African identities and environments in the imagination, reading, and production of space through a practice that sources inspiration and oscillates between methods. Her work on community organizations in Addis Ababa and Nairobi focuses on increasing the visibility of everyday works of repair and care in the urban mainstream discourse so as to build a ground for the imagination of an alternative. Yasmin co-teaches Integrated Design Studio I at Addis Ababa University’s College of Technology & the Built Environment with a focus on Architectures of Consensus looking at how conflicts, interests & potentials manifest and are realized in how the state, communities and individuals interact around the urban space. At the Pan-African Biennale, she contributes to its curatorial work in foregrounding situated practices that emerge from (re)explorations of identity through alternative modes of knowledge production.
